A Practical Guide for Mid-Career Women to Move from Professional Serendipity to Intentional Advancement

Learn More About Now, Near, Next

For some, mid-career feels like a merry-go-round. You start in your emerging career eager to jump on. You pick the pink pony and hold on tight. You might move to the purple pony during the first stop. Look, Mom, no hands! However, a few years later, you look up and are still belted in the same saddle, on the same ride, following behind a new group of riders, going in circles. You need a bigger amusement park and a more challenging ride!

Now, Near, Next debunks the myth that putting your head down and working hard is the best way to realize your fullest potential. Energizing self-agency means taking control of your path ahead. Instead of conforming to social norms or other people’s expectations, you look forward with intentionality, action, and reflection.

It is time to amplify your potential by making room for yourself, bringing forethought to your journey, and developing a roadmap to your Now, Near, Next.

“Authors Cynthia Bentzen-Mercer and Kimberly Rath courageously confront age-old conditioning that has thwarted women’s progress throughout history: women must always be humble. The pervasive notion that women must keep their heads down and work hard has only served to propel the careers of their male peers, who instead are looking ahead and surging forward. Enter Now, Near, Next, a pragmatic guide that encourages women to reclaim their autonomy, unapologetically invest in their future and hype women to do the same.”

Reginald R. Mebane, Senior Executive Service (SES)

“Meeting and working with Cynthia was an absolute game changer for me! She has been an integral part of my growth and development, and continues to have a lasting impact on every aspect of my professional life.

Cynthia is that rare leader and coach who inspires those she works with--not because of her own accomplishments (and there are many!), but because she has the ability to fully see, understand, and honor the person she is working with, identifying their visible and yet-to-be discovered/developed talents, skills, abilities, goals, and desires for the future and connect them with activities and opportunities which foster confidence and tremendous growth.

When Cynthia shared that she would be coaching others, I was thrilled--thrilled for those who would have the opportunity to work with this incredible woman. It is truly a gift that could change the trajectory of a person's life--it certainly did mine!”

Andrea Koch, Assistant Director, Women's Resource Center of Northern Michigan, Inc.
